Jodeci Forever My Lady Turns 35 Years Old

Jodeci changed the sound of R&B forever with the release of their debut album Forever My Lady. Forever My Lady turns 35 years old today as its viewed as one of the greatest R&B albums of their generation. The raw, emotional, and street-inspired style that would make Jodeci one of the most influential R&B groups of the 1990s. At a time when polished vocal groups dominated R&B, Jodeci brought a completely different energy. The quartet — K-Ci, JoJo, DeVante Swing, and Mr. Dalvin — blended gospel vocals, hip-hop swagger, and new jack swing. Produced primarily by DeVante Swing alongside Al B. Sure!, Forever My Lady became an instant success. The album debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart and eventually earned multi-platinum status, selling millions of copies worldwide. The album delivered a string of classic hits that still resonate today.

Songs like “Forever My Lady,” “Stay,” and “Come and Talk to Me” became signature tracks of early ‘90s R&B. Beyond the charts, Forever My Lady left a lasting impact on music culture. The album helped pave the way for future R&B acts that mixed vulnerability with street appeal. Artists and groups like Dru Hill, Jagged Edge, and even modern stars such as Chris Brown and Bryson Tiller have reflected elements of Jodeci’s influence in their music and style. Gotta Love was their first single from the album, and it dropped three months before the album was released. The title track, Forever My Lady was the second single from the album. Forever My Lady was the first of five number one R&B hits for the group, spending two weeks at number one on the US R&B chart. It was written and produced by member DeVante Swing and singer/producer Al B. Sure!.

The song was dedicated to Al B. Sure!’s then girlfriend Kim Porter, as well as their newborn son Quincy. Stay would become their third single released off Forever My Lady. Stay was the group’s second R&B hit, spending two weeks at number one on the US R&B chart. The hits kept coming and in March of 1992, Jodeci released their fourth single Come and Talk to Me. Come and Talk to Me spent two weeks at the number 1 spot on the R&B chart and peaked at 11 on the Hot 100. The song also topped the R&B year-end chart for 1992. Come and Talk to Me went on to go gold. With the success of Forever My Lady, the group released their fifth and final single, I’m Still Waiting.

The “Swing Hip Hop Mix” (or “Swing Mob Radio Mix”) version is the version of the song used in the music video instead of the album version. Thirty-five years later, Forever My Lady remains one of the most important R&B debut albums ever released. For many fans, the album represents the golden era of ‘90s R&B — a moment when emotion, style, and authenticity came together perfectly. As the album celebrates its 35th anniversary, Jodeci’s legacy continues to inspire a new generation of artists and listeners. Forever My Lady wasn’t just an album — it was the beginning of a movement that helped reshape modern R&B forever. Forever My Lady went on to sell over three million copies.
