DJ Quik is one of the pioneers of the West Coast sound. Quik is known for his clever and witty rhymes and what he does behind the boards. Outside of his own albums, DJ Quik has produced classic albums like All Eyez On Me, the Black Album and many others. Before all of that, Quik released his first album back in 1991. Quik is the Name was the album title, and it turns 35 years old today. DJ Quik was signed by Profile Records in the summer of 1990, after they heard his 1987 mixtape “The Red Tape”. Quik revealed to Vibe Magazine that Quik is the Name was originally going to be a mixtape. Born and Raised in Compton was the first single from the album. The track was written and produced by DJ Quik himself.
It debuted at number 16 on June 1, 1991, on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and spent 14 weeks on the chart. Tonite was the second single from the Quik is My Name project and it’s a classic. Tonite is the track that put DJ Quik on the map across the nation. The song became his most successful and highest charting single to date. Tonite is one of the greatest hip hop records of all time and one of the best from the west coast. The title track, Quik is the Name was the third single from the album. Quik Is the Name appeared on several critics’ top albums lists. In 1998, the album was listed on The Source’s list of the 100 greatest Rap albums of all-time list. The album was listed at number 28 of “The 50 Greatest Debut Albums in Hip-Hop History” by Complex.
In 2022, Rolling Stone placed the album at number 156 on its list of The 200 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums of All Time. This is one of those albums that don’t get talked about enough. Quik came through with the rhymes and production also. Quik is My Name sold over a million copies and earned him a platinum plaque.
