Too Short Gettin’ It Turns 30 Years Old

Too Short is one of the longest tenured rappers we have ever encountered. Short Dawg released his first album, Don’t Stop Rappin’ back in October 1983. In May of 1985, too Short dropped his Players album. Too Short began to make a name for himself and he released Raw, Uncut and X-Rated in November of 1986. After gaining popularity with his first three releases, Too Short signed with Jive Records. In the summer of 1987, Too Short dropped his fourth studio album and major label debut, Born to Mack. Too Short sold around 50,000 copies of the album directly from the trunk of his car. Born to Mack became Short Dawg’s first Gold record. All Too Short’s albums went Gold from 1987 to the year 2000. In that span, Too Short released nine albums. Too Short’s fifth album, Life Is…..Too Short dropped about a year and a half later.

Life Is……Too Short was released in 1989 and it’s still his highest selling album. The album sold well over two million copies off the strength of the title track and I Ain’t Trippin. Too Short released four more albums from 1990 to 1995. Short Dog’s in the House, Shorty the Pimp, Get In Where You Fit In and Cocktails were the names. After the release of his Cocktails album, Too Short said his next album would be his final one. Getting’ It (Album Number Ten) was the name of the final project, and it turns 30 years old today. Getting’ It became Too Short’s sixth consecutive album to go platinum. In 2023, Pitchfork called it Too Short’s “imperial ’90s peak” as well as “a slick and funky landmark of pimp rap”. Gettin’ It is the most complete Too Short album in my opinion and my favorite one from him.

Overall, this showed his versatility, storytelling and proved too many he’s a good rapper. Gettin’ It and Never Talk Down are the only singles to be released from the album. Buy You Some with Erick Sermon, MC Breed, and Kool-Ace were popular in the Atlanta area. During my time listening to the radio, it was the introductory song on V-103 at 6 pm. As many of you know, Too Short didn’t retire and he would release a new album three years later. The album was called Can’t Stay Away and has since released eleven more albums. Too Short dropped Sir Too Short Vol. 1 (Freaky Tales) a little more than a year ago. Check out my top 5 tracks from the Gettin’ It album below.
