Ghost Town DJs My Boo for Throwback Thursday

Ghost Town DJs My Boo for Throwback Thursday

So So Def Records is one of the most iconic record labels ever. In 1993, Jermaine Dupri turned his production company into a label. Xscape, Da Brat, Kris Kross, Lil Bow Wow, and Jagged Edge are just a few artists who were signed to the label. So So Def found success out of the gate with Xscape and their debut album going platinum. In 1994, Da Brat became the 1st solo female emcee to be certified for Platinum album sales. Da Brat’s Funkdafied album is still one of best hip hop albums from a female emcee. Xscape returned with their second album, Off the Hook in 1995 and it went platinum also. The success continued in 1996 with the releases of Da Brat’s Anuthatntrum and Young, Rich & Dangerous from Kris Kross. Both of those albums went gold, but So So Def released another album in 1996.

The So So Def Bass All Stars album would also drop in 1996. Playa Poncho, Raheem the Dream, MC Shy D, Mr. Collipark, Kidd Money, and many others all appeared on the album. For those who aren’t familiar with Atlanta hip hop, bass music was the primary genre. Outkast and their Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik changed the culture for good. Outkast opened the doors for the likes of T.I., Ludacris and Jeezy. As far as the So So Def Bass All Stars album was represented by two singles. Whatz Up, Whatz Up was the first single from the album and it was from Playa Poncho. Whatz Up, Whatz Up was one of the many hits for the summer of 1996, especially in the clubs. The second and final single was from Ghost Town DJs and their classic track, My Boo. My Boo is a classic and it’s my featured Throwback Thursday track.

The song peaked at number 31 on the US Billboard Hot 100 on its initial release in 1996. In 2016, the song was re-popularized by the “Running Man Challenge” and re-entered the Hot 100. In 2022, Rolling Stone ranked it number 101 in their list of the “200 Greatest Dance Songs of All Time”. It was also featured in one of my TikTok videos also. Check out the video for My Boo above.
