Anita Baker is one of the greatest R&B singers of all time. She released six studio albums, one compilation & live album, and twenty-four singles in her career that spanned over 20 years. Anita Baker has been referred to as the Queen of Romantic Quiet-Storm R&B/Soul during her time. She released her first solo album in 1983 called The Songstress. This came after starting her career in the late 1970s with the funk band Chapter 8. The Songstress was not a commercial success upon its initial release, though the album met with moderate success on the R&B charts. Anita Baker showed she had potential, so she signed with Elektra Records. Less than three years later, she returned with her second album called Rapture. Rapture would go on the become her most successful album of her career. The album earned her a pair of Grammy Awards in the process.
Sweet Love was the first single from the Rapture album and it’s my featured Throwback Thursday track of the week. Sweet Love won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Song at the 29th Annual Grammy Awards. Rapture is one of my favorite albums from any genre of all time. The album is timeless as it approaches its 40th anniversary from release. Anita Baker made headlines a couple of years ago because Jalen Hurts is such a big fan of hers. Speaking of music, my playlist this week consisted of the Tender Lover album from Babyface. 2014 Forest Hills Drive, Raekwon’s Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang joint and a few others were played. There was a lot going on in the sports world with free agency in the NFL kicking off.
Maxx Crosby was traded to the Ravens, but it was rescinded due to a failed physical. Baltimore went on to immediately sign Trey Hendrickson to a four-year deal. There’s been a lot of NFL stars to sign contract extensions also. NXT had its Vengeance Day special this past weekend and it was a good event.
