Busta Rhymes The Coming Turns 30 Years Old

Busta Rhymes has been in the music business for about 35 years. Busta signed his first contract at the age of 17 as a member of the Leaders of the New School. In 1991, they released their debut album called A Future Without a Past. The group received a lot of praise, with many calling it a fun album. Two years later, they returned with their T.I.M.E. (The Inner Mind’s Eye) album. The album did not fare as their debut album, garnering a mixed critical reception. After the album’s release, the group began having both creative and personal problems, resulting in their disbandment. Busta Rhymes stood out the most out of the group. Busta signed a solo deal and recorded his album, and it was called The Coming. The Coming turns 30 years old today and it was one of many classic albums to drop in 1996.

Busta appeared on tracks with A Tribe Called Quest, the Notorious B.I.G., Heavy D and the Boyz, and Mary J. Blige. This was all before he would drop any solo record. The album reached number six on the Billboard 200 chart. The Coming would sell over a million copies earning Busta Rhymes a platinum plaque. Busta Rhymes would release three singles to accompany the album. The lead single, “Woo-Hah!! Got You All in Check” reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1996. The track earned Rhymes his first nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance at the 39th Grammy Awards. In 2008, it was ranked number 56 on VH1’s “100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop”. It’s a Party featuring Zhane becoming the second single from The Coming album. This party track was one of the highlights of the album.

Do My Thing would be the third and final single from The Coming album. Do My Thing was another dope record from the album. It didn’t garner as much attention as the first singles, but it was a good record. Busta Rhymes has released 11 albums, appeared on a plethora of remixes and dropped mixtapes throughout his career. Busta dropped his last album called Blockbusta back in 2023, which wasn’t received well. Check out my top 5 tracks from The Coming album below.
