4 Ways to Fight Allergies in Georgia

Allergy season in Georgia is notorious, and almost everyone you know is probably affected by it. We all have experienced our vehicles turning yellow due to pollen. The season is from late February through late September or October. From March through May is usually peak season for allergies. Spring pollen includes oak, birch, hickory, and pine. Pollen starts showing up in late February and peaks from late March to mid-April. The Grass & Summer Pollen begins in late May, and it lasts throughout the summer. The late season, or better known as Fall Pollen, takes place in the middle of September. We all have dealt with runny eyes, coughing, sneezing, and so much more due to allergies. Check out these 4 ways to fight allergies in Georgia.

Control Your Home

As soon as you enter your home, take off your shoes and change clothes. There’s a good chance your clothes and shoes will have pollen on them. Make sure you take a shower before going to bed. You can’t see it, but the pollen sticks to your skin and hair. This is the perfect time to run your air conditioner and avoid opening the windows. If possible, use a HEPA air purifier as it helps improve indoor air quality. HEPA filters trap common allergens such as dust, pollen, pet dander, and mold spores. If you have pets, make sure to wipe them down when you come back inside. Use a damp cloth whenever you clean because dry dusting spreads pollen.

Limit Outdoor Exposure

Avoid going outdoors early in the morning. Early morning is when pollen is at its peak. Limit your time outside on those dry or windy days. We know there’s yard work to be done, or you like to grill out also. The best time to venture outside is after it rains. There are ways to check out the daily pollen count. Plan your activities on those days when the pollen count is low.

Use the Right Medication

Zyntec, Claritin, and Allergra are common to use to help fight your allergies. Flonase is a steroid spray that many people like me also use. You should have any of those on deck during peak season. It can take around a week or two for nasal sprays like Flonase to work. I’ve been known to eat locally made honey to help fight allergies due to pollen.

Some Habits for Your Body

It’s smart to jump in the shower if you have been outside. As mentioned, pollen can stick to your skin and camp out in your hair. During this time, you may want to wash your bedding frequently also. This is the perfect time to wear sunglasses, also because the pollen can get into your eyes. This is a must on those high pollen days. The good filters are changed around every three months. During this time, you may want to change your filters more frequently. You may want to look into a filter service where they deliver them to your front door.

Recap

Make sure you take your meds in the morning. Pollen is bad in Georgia, and more than likely, you will need help in fighting back against allergies. The weather is perfect during this time of year, but keep those windows closed. I’m sure you can see the pollen on your windows. You don’t want that pollen to enter your home because you will be fighting an uphill battle. Take a shower every night, and if you’re outside a lot, hit the shower after you get inside your home. Check the pollen counts every day so you know how to attack your day.
