More than two decades after proclaiming himself the “King of the South,” T.I. has officially released what he says will be the final studio album of his career: Kill The King. The highly anticipated project arrived on June 26, 2026, through Grand Hustle and EMPIRE, marking the end of an era for one of hip-hop’s most influential Southern artists. We were all introduced to T.I. with his debut album called I’m Serious. Trap Muzik was the follow-up and arguably my favorite project from T.I.
A Farewell to the Throne
The title Kill The King carries a deeper meaning than simply serving as another album name. T.I. has explained for years that the phrase reflects the pressures that come with wearing the crown. In chess, the objective is to “kill the king,” and T.I. views the title as a metaphor for the challenges, criticism, and expectations that have followed him throughout his career.
The album’s release fulfills a vision T.I. first discussed nearly a decade ago. During Grammy Week earlier this year, he confirmed that Kill The King would serve as his final solo album before shifting his focus toward acting, business ventures, comedy, and family life.
Star-Studded Features and Production
T.I. isn’t leaving the music world quietly. Kill The King features an impressive lineup of collaborators, including:
- Usher
- Anderson .Paak
- 2 Chainz
- Jeezy
- T-Pain
- Summer Walker
- YoungBoy Never Broke Again
- The-Dream
The production roster is equally impressive, featuring contributions from Pharrell Williams and Dr. Dre, helping give the project the feel of a true career-capping statement.
Highlights from the Tracklist
The 18-track album blends introspection, Southern rap traditions, and collaborations with both longtime peers and newer voices. Early fan favorites include:
- “LET ‘EM KNOW”
- “WHERE I’M FROM” featuring Anderson .Paak
- “DOPE BOYS ACADEMY” featuring T-Pain, Jeezy, and 2 Chainz
- “HOW IT WENT” featuring The-Dream
- “A KING’S THOUGHT” featuring Heiress Harris
The project balances nostalgia with modern production, offering a reflection on T.I.’s journey from Atlanta trap pioneer to hip-hop icon. Kill the King is a dope project, but nowhere near the Urban Legend, Paper Trail, and King albums.
The Legacy of T.I.
Few artists have influenced Southern hip-hop the way T.I. has. Albums such as Trap Muzik, Urban Legend, and King helped define the sound of Atlanta rap and opened doors for a generation of artists that followed. Kill The King serves as both a farewell and a celebration of that legacy. After listening to the new album, would you compare it with one of my top 5 albums from T.I.
Whether this truly marks the end of T.I.’s recording career remains to be seen—hip-hop retirements rarely last forever. But if Kill The King is indeed his final album, it provides a fitting conclusion to one of the most impactful careers in Southern rap history.
