We have taken a look at the AFC East and North divisions. We now turn our attention to the AFC South. The AFC South could feature one of the NFL’s most competitive division races during the 2026 season. The Jacksonville Jaguars are defending champions, the Houston Texans have a championship-caliber defense, the Indianapolis Colts possess several difference-makers, and the Tennessee Titans are building around young quarterback Cam Ward.

Jacksonville and Houston appear to be the division’s strongest teams, but only one can finish on top. Here is how the AFC South could unfold this season.

1. Houston Texans

The Houston Texans enter the season with enough talent to win the AFC South and potentially compete for the conference championship. They are one of my top 5 AFC teams entering the 2026 season.

Houston’s defense should remain the team’s greatest strength. Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter give the Texans an outstanding pass-rushing combination, while Derek Stingley Jr., Kamari Lassiter, Jalen Pitre and Calen Bullock lead an impressive secondary. The addition of safety Reed Blankenship could make an already dangerous unit even stronger.

If the defense consistently plays at an elite level, Houston will not need to win shootouts every week.

The biggest question surrounds C.J. Stroud and the offense. Stroud has not completely recaptured the form that made him one of the NFL’s brightest young stars during his rookie season. Houston must protect him better and create more manageable situations on early downs.

The Texans attempted to address their offensive-line problems by adding veterans Wyatt Teller and Braden Smith and drafting interior lineman Keylan Rutledge in the first round. Running back David Montgomery should also bring power and consistency to a rushing attack that needed improvement.

If those changes work, the Texans will have the division’s most complete roster.

Prediction: 11-6

2. Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars will not surrender their division championship without a serious fight.

Jacksonville won 13 games and captured the AFC South in 2025. The team now has an opportunity to make consecutive postseason appearances for the first time since the 1998 and 1999 seasons.

Trevor Lawrence remains the key to Jacksonville’s championship hopes. When Lawrence protects the football and plays decisively, the Jaguars possess an offense capable of competing with almost anyone in the AFC. His continued development in Liam Coen’s system could make Jacksonville even more dangerous.

Travis Hunter is another major factor. His ability to affect games as a receiver and defensive back gives Jacksonville something no other team in the division possesses. A healthy Hunter could become one of the NFL’s most valuable all-around weapons.

The Jaguars have enough talent on offense, defense and special teams to win double-digit games again. However, repeating a 13-win season will be difficult, especially with a tougher schedule and Houston closing the gap. Several members of the Jaguars’ own media team still expect Jacksonville to challenge for another division title and return to the playoffs

Prediction: 10-7

3. Indianapolis Colts

Indianapolis might be the biggest wild card in the division.

The Colts have legitimate stars, including running back Jonathan Taylor, cornerback Sauce Gardner and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner. Taylor gives Indianapolis the ability to control games on the ground, while Gardner can take away one side of the field when healthy.

The uncertainty begins at quarterback. Daniel Jones is returning from an Achilles injury after receiving a two-year contract from the Colts. If he returns to his pre-injury form and avoids turnovers, Indianapolis could remain in the playoff race deep into the season.

The defense also needs young pass rushers Laiatu Latu and Jaylahn Tuimoloau to take another step. Indianapolis cannot rely entirely on its secondary to slow down the top quarterbacks on its schedule.

Unfortunately, the Colts face a challenging opening stretch that includes Baltimore, Kansas City, Houston, Washington and Pittsburgh. A slow start could leave them chasing the Texans and Jaguars for the remainder of the season.

Indianapolis should be competitive, but there are too many questions to select the Colts as division champions.

Prediction: 8-9

4. Tennessee Titans

The Titans are improving, but they may still be at least one season away from challenging for the division.

Cam Ward’s development will be the most important part of Tennessee’s season. He showed promise as a rookie, and the arrival of offensive coordinator Brian Daboll could help him take a significant step forward. Daboll has experience working with young quarterbacks and should build an offense that fits Ward’s mobility and aggressive playing style.

Tennessee also added more help around its young quarterback, including Carnell Tate and running back Nick Singleton through the draft. Those additions could give the offense more speed and long-term potential.

The Titans should be more entertaining and competitive than they were during Ward’s rookie season. However, their roster does not yet possess the overall depth of Houston or Jacksonville. Tennessee’s primary goal should be establishing its offensive identity and determining which young players belong in the team’s long-term plans.

Prediction: 6-11

Final AFC South Standings Prediction

1. Houston Texans: 11-6
2. Jacksonville Jaguars: 10-7
3. Indianapolis Colts: 8-9
4. Tennessee Titans: 6-11

Why the Texans Will Win the AFC South

Jacksonville may have the more consistent offense, but Houston has the division’s best defense and the higher overall ceiling.

The Texans can pressure quarterbacks without constantly blitzing, cover receivers throughout the secondary and create the turnovers that decide close divisional games. Their season will ultimately depend on whether the rebuilt offensive line can protect Stroud.

If Stroud receives better protection and returns to playing with confidence, Houston should produce enough offense to support its dominant defense. Jacksonville will remain close throughout the season, and the two head-to-head matchups could determine the champion.

The Jaguars are fully capable of repeating, but the prediction here is that the Houston Texans finish 11-6 and reclaim the AFC South title in 2026.
